Cats make great pets! And kittens are so adorable!

Neutering (or spaying) is the process by which your cat's veterinarian renders her sterile. When male cats are sterilized, the process is called neutering. When females receive the same treatment, it's called spaying (nonetheless, you can refer to either procedure as neutering). Stray cats & feral cats differ in their relationship to & interactions w/ people. Feral cats are born from other ferals or from stray cats. By spaying your new cat as soon as possilbe it does help our ecosystem. Cats and birds: The combination can be disastrous. Although outside domestic cats (Felis catus) can make wonderful pets, they threaten birds and other wildlife and disrupt ecosystems. And so do the stray & feral cats. Read More.Attention Kitty Owners: Save a bird with a cat bell or bright color bib. The birds roles in our ecosystems is important. Outside roaming wild cats that are not spayed grow high in their population & so do their litters. This is not an anti-cat thing but outside cats are killing billions of birds and other animals in the US each year, 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals yearly. And feral and stray cats were the worst offenders. Did you know a cat collar bell or bright color collar cat bib reduces a cat's mammal and bird kills by 34-50%.? :: Shop for cat bell collar

Know the signs and avoid the risks:

Across the country, about 60 to 70 dogs and 250 cats contract rabies every year. Nearly all the animals are unvaccinated and become infected after contact with wildlife. Yearly, between 30,000 to 60,000 people receive the rabies vaccine after possible contact with the virus, the CDC reported. Once a rabies infection is established, there's no effective treatment. Though a small number of people have survived rabies, the disease is usually fatal. For that reason, if you think you've been exposed to rabies, you must get a series of shots to prevent the infection from taking hold. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kitten Care

Read our topic on kitten care. Kittens are like raising a new infant. It takes time, know-how, training, & lots of hugs and kisses. Kittens will instinctively use the litter box as they get older, but their mother also helps to teach them. Distemper vaccinations are important to have done for your kitten. Kitten Tip: If you got your cat from a shelter, ask their advice as they may have an veterinarian list for you to make an appointment take it in for an exam. Some pet owners trained their cats on leashes to walk them. Try to keep your kitten/cat indoors because most cats die early from auto mishaps or bites from wild outside animals. They will live longer. The wild kitten does not have a good chance of surviving out there in the wilderness. We need cats and we love our cats. They provide the best way to keep disease away from our family by getting rid of the dreaded rodent in our environment. Always remember and tend to have your kitten spayed & get their shots they will live a longer happier life. More time for you to enjoy that purring moment. Jimmy C. Dog Journey - My Own Story Memorial About My Beloved Pets & Others... Pet Memorial Videos

I have been adopting my cats and dogs from my local animal shelters for years. They are part of our family. My mix breed dog named Rex just passed on this fall. He was about 9 years old. I am sad of course. I did some research and found that certain dog genes may cause a dog to live a shorter time. Moreover, studies show that larger dog breeds may have a shorter lifespan than smaller breeds.

Do you have a cat or dog hoarder in your neighbor hood? If so contact your local animal shelter or police department to report it. It is an unhealthy lifestyle for both the animals and the hoarder. Animal hoarding is a complex mental health, animal welfare and public safety issue.

Donna P. I am cat crazy - just love my cats

I adopted my adult cat Frisky at the local SPCA because I felt that others would select a kitten first at the shelter and I did not want Frisky to be put-downs because the shelter was already full of many unwanted adult cats or tons of kittens. Kittens find home fast while adult cats are last to go. Glad I did, Frisky waits for me to come home from work and purrs the minute I walk in the door. I am working now with a cat hoarder case in our town. Most of the cats were in bad shape time we find out about. Remember if you are aware of any type of pet hoarding contact your local shelter.
